It will be hard to pick next weeks team after today's whitewash of Sturt, there just wasn't any resistance, all but a few did what they had to do to prove themselves for next week. Chad Cornes gave 110% in the first half with two goals and other goals coming from Pickett, Dew, Hall, Tredrea & K Cornes, other standouts were Tredrea & Lade. Stephen Salopek did well with some great centre clearances, proving why he should be given a chance early in the season, Lade dominated also early, Stephen Gilham & Chris Hall showed the courage needed at AFL level, Koulouriotis blazed away wastefully, missing two early shots at goal and then kicking into the man running into a empty goal face. After half time came a flood of easy goals with Primus 3, Schofiled 3, Dew 3, & other goals from Carr, Cockatoo Collins, Brogan, James, Tredrea, Hall, with Cassisi dominating all over the ground, Wanganeen showed his class with some great clearances out of defence along with Wakelin & Morgan. It was also great to see Ebert get a run on the wing, having a few early clangers but had the skill and tenacity to regain possesion, the same way his father did, Chris Hall was another obvious standout. I fear the selectors job this week there is going to be some players that miss out, but Im sure there chance will come. We have a lot to look forward to this year with this current playing group .

You realise that we expect a full report from every game now. Thanks for that RT, it's handy for those of us that weren't able to make the game.

Yep thanks for that, I had to miss the game too unfortunately It's good to hear that players like Chris Hall, Cassisi, Salopek and Gilham are playing well. It also seems that Ebert may have an exciting future...can't wait until the Wizard Cup next week ;D

Williams sharpens knife for opener
Sunday Mail 16feb03
PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams faces an agonising week at the selection table as he attempts to whittle his squad back to 24 for Saturday's Wizard Cup opener against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.
After watching his side pump SANFL premier Sturt by 173 points at Alberton Oval yesterday, Williams said players would be unlucky to miss out on a place in the Power's line-up for its first match of the official pre-season competition.
Williams again was impressed by the form of some of his young charges, notably wingman Domenic Cassisi and draftee Steven Salopek, as they took Port to a hefty early lead with the likes of Matthew Primus, Gavin Wanganeen, Peter Burgoyne, Josh Francou and Stuart Dew watching on.
However, the Power coach said even their flawless form over the pre-season may not be enough to guarantee a place in the side to take on the Crows next week.
"Some people will justifiably get a chance and some people will unjustifiably miss out but we can only pick 24," Williams said.
"Cassisi played well but then all of a sudden in the last two terms Primus, Wanganeen and Burgoyne came on, so it makes it difficult even though they played well. If you want to pick your absolute rip-roaring best side, some people have to miss out."
While Williams may have some headaches in store this week, he left Alberton Oval yesterday with many positives.
Recruits Byron Pickett, who burst into the game with two goals in a minute in the opening term, and Stuart Cochrane, whose hard running was an early feature, showed enough to suggest they will be handy additions this season.
Chad Cornes, thrust into the uncustomary role of a midfielder, won a swag of possessions, used his strength well and still managed to score two goals in his time on the field. He may give Port another pinch-hitting option in the centre square during the season.
"If Chad could play a minor role there at some stage that would work nicely for us," Williams said.
His brother, Kane, was another of Port's early good players, along with key forward Warren Tredrea who gave his young midfielders a clear target to kick to.
Jarrad Schofield (four goals) and Primus (three) created havoc up forward in the last two terms and Roger James and Josh Carr won a lot of the ball when released into the play.
Gavin Wanganeen played just the final two periods but still managed to wow the crowd with his acrobatic feats.
It left Port with plenty to build on leading into the Wizard Cup.
"We started with seven or eight players who we think would be first-up starts, the other eight or 10 were junior players if you like and they really took up the opportunity to play with those more seasoned players to form a good start," Williams said.
"It was a good indication that our young blokes are moving along and with those better players around them, there is a good and bright future for the club.
"Some players came on when we were 15 goals up but they still pressed for their position.
"I was happy for Pickett and Cochrane that they could show some form to the playing group because they haven't had an opportunity to do that yet."
Sturt battled gamely for 100 minutes of torrid, running football but simply was outclassed. Its first goal took 17 minutes and it had to wait until 10 minutes into the fourth for its second.
Port 7.5 10.11 19.13 23.17 28.12 (189)
Sturt 1.0 1.2 1.2 2.3 2.4 (16)
Goals - Port: Dew 5, Schofield 4, Primus 3, Pickett, C. Cornes, Tredrea, Brogan, Hall 2, K. Cornes, Cassisi, Carr, James, Thurstans, Cockatoo-Collins. Sturt: Jarvis, Greenfield. Best - Port: Tredrea, C. Cornes, Dew, Salopek, K. Cornes, Cochrane, Cassisi, Schofield, Lade, James. Sturt: Maloney, Powell, Graham, Weatherald, A. Burton, Lavender.

Hmmmm, sounds like you lot played well. Good luck against the crows.
I have some news for you all on the Brisbane front.
Black has improved (if that is possible) Akermanis has lost weight and is fit as. Caracella is going to be a gun and the new kids played superbly in the intraclub game.
