Cornes ends Wilson's trial reign By ANDREW CAPEL 11feb03
KANE Cornes yesterday did what few believed was possible at Port Adelaide – beat Michael Wilson in a 2.2km time trial.
Fitness freak Wilson's reign as the Power's running king is temporarily over after Cornes produced the run of his life to edge Wilson by about half-a-metre on his way to setting a new Port record for the run of six minutes, 39 seconds.
Cornes and Wilson, who was given the same time as his younger team-mate despite finishing a clear second, shattered the previous record – held by Wilson – by five seconds.
"Both of us are pretty happy with that," Cornes, who beat his previous best time by a massive 10 seconds, said. "I'm happy to share the record with Michael but it was good to finally beat him. I got sick of seeing the back of him."
It was a day of records at the Power with 14 players running personal best times in the morning run at the Mackinnon Parade parklands.
Recruit Stuart Cochrane butchered his best time of the pre-season by 20 seconds to finish third while Domenic Cassisi (fourth), teenage draftee Steven Salopek (fifth), vice-captains Warren Tredrea and Stephen Paxman and Nick Stevens, who shaved five seconds off his best time, were among those to set new marks.
"We had a pretty easy week last week and the legs felt pretty good," Cornes said.
As for any ribbing Cornes might give Wilson, he said it could hold for later.
"He's got me (in the run) every other time and he's played more games than me, so I'll wait for a while," Cornes said.
